今年度からコモンアプリケーションのエッセイで変わった点は、何度でもエッセイを変えることができることです。今までエッセイは3回までしか変更できませんでした。一つの大学にエッセイを提出した後、次の大学に内容を少しでも変えたエッセイを送ったとしたら、もうあと一回しか変更することができなかったのです。今年度から、8校の大学にエッセイを送る場合それぞれの大学に合わせてエッセイの内容を変えることもできるようになりました。
だからといって、大学ごとにエッセイの内容を変えることはお勧めしません。大学に合わせたエッセイはサプルメントと呼ばれるエッセイで書くことにして、アプリケーションにはすべての大学に使える会心のエッセイを送りましょう。
今年から大学によってはコモンアプリケーションのエッセイを提出する必要がない場合があります。でも出願するすべての大学がエッセイを要求としないということはまずありえませんから、エッセイを書かなければならないはずです。要求しない大学にも仕上げたエッセイを提出しましょう。
これからコモンアプリケーションのエッセイにとりかかる人のためにもう一度エッセイの設問を記載します。今年度から変更、追加された部分はイタリック体になっています。
1. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.
2. The lessons we take from failure can be fundamental to later success. Recount an incident or time when you experienced failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
3. Reflect on a time when you challenged a belief or idea. What prompted you to act? Would you make the same decision again?
4. Describe a problem you've solved or a problem you'd like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma-anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution.
5. Discuss an accomplishment or event, formal or informal, that marked your transition from childhood to adulthood within your culture, community, or family.
