誰も書かないエッセイをめざして

もうすぐ夏休みが始まりますね。2015年秋に大学進学する人のためのコモン・アプリケーションは8月1日から見ることができます。エッセイの設問は、以下の一つから選ぶことになります。秋からは他のエッセイや学校の勉強でますます忙しくなると思います。夏の間にエッセイ一つだけでもほぼ完成させると、気持ちに余裕が生まれるでしょう。

1. Some students have a background or story that is so central to their identity that they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.

2. Recount an incident or time when you experienced failure. How did it affect you, and what lessons did you learn?

3. Reflect on a time when you challenged a belief or idea. What prompted you to act? Would you make the same decision again?

4. Describe a place or environment where you are perfectly content. What do you do or experience there, and why is it meaningful to you?

5. Discuss an accomplishment or event, formal or informal, that marked your transition from childhood to adulthood within your culture, community, or family.

エッセイには、一般論でなく自分だけのユニークな経験を書く必要があります。人の行かないような国へ旅行したりする必要はありません。誰でも自分にとって大切な人、場所、物事があるはずです。そこから自分は何を学び成長したか、今後その資質をどうキャンパスライフで生かせるかという観点を入れて書くとよいエッセイになるでしょう。

特に最初の一文は大切です。読み手が先を読みたくなるようなインパクトのある始まりを考えて下さい。会話文や自分の体験のまっただ中を最初にもってくるのもよい方法だと思います。
